The Australian Department of Home Affairs has reinstated the TOEFL iBT as an acceptable English proficiency test for visa categories, starting May 5, 2024. This decision marks a reversal of policy following the suspension of TOEFL iBT acceptability announced on July 26, 2023.
Although the TOEFL iBT scores have been reinstated for visa applications, tests taken between July 26, 2023, and May 4, 2024, are not valid.
Key Changes and Their Implications:
- Acceptance Resumed: TOEFL iBT tests taken on or after May 5, 2024, are now valid for visa and migration applications.
- Exclusion Period: Any TOEFL iBT results obtained between July 26, 2023, and May 4, 2024, remain invalid for visa purposes.
- Test Validity and Conditions: Scores from tests conducted before July 26, 2023, continue to be valid for two years from the test date. Tests must be taken at approved and secured testing centres because online versions are not accepted for visa purposes.
This change gives applicants more options, allowing them to choose between TOEFL iBT, IELTS, and PTE based on their needs and preferences.
