Bridging Visa B processing times

Author: Jair Castro – Team Lead & Migration Strategist

International travel while waiting for a visa decision can be stressful, particularly when timing is critical. Bridging Visa B plays a crucial role for applicants who need to leave and re-enter Australia while their substantive visa application remains under assessment.

Recent experience indicates that Bridging Visa B applications are taking longer than many applicants expect. Without follow-up or intervention, processing is currently taking around four to five weeks in many cases. This makes early planning essential and significantly increases the risk for anyone applying close to their intended travel date.

What is a Bridging Visa B

The Bridging Visa B Subclass 020 allows eligible Bridging Visa A (BVA) holders to leave and return to Australia during a specified travel period while their substantive visa application is being processed. It is a temporary visa and must be granted before travel occurs.

A Bridging Visa B may be granted with single or multiple travel rights and remains valid only until the specified travel period ends. If the travel facility does not cover the intended journey, a new Bridging Visa B must be granted before departure.

What you can do when you hold a Bridging Visa B

When a Bridging Visa B Subclass 020 is granted, the visa holder may:

  • Stay lawfully in Australia while their visa application is being processed, or while a decision is under review at the Tribunal or through judicial proceedings
  • Leave and return to Australia within the specific travel period stated in the visa grant
  • Apply for further travel only by obtaining a new Bridging Visa B before departure

Important conditions to understand:

  • Work rights are not automatic and depend on the conditions attached to the Bridging Visa B
  • Visa conditions must be checked in VEVO or the grant notice
  • If the specified travel period ends while the visa holder is outside Australia, the Bridging Visa B will cease and re-entry will not be possible

Current processing time reality

The Department of Home Affairs does not publish processing timeframes for Bridging Visa B applications. As a result, there is no guaranteed decision period that applicants can rely on when planning travel.

This timeframe is being observed in many cases and reflects current departmental workloads and assessment practices, rather than any formal service standard. Processing may extend beyond this period even where follow-ups are made.

Processing time can vary depending on factors such as:

  • Overall departmental workload and seasonal demand
  • The completeness and quality of the application and supporting documentation
  • The purpose and urgency of the travel (substantial grounds) and the strength of supporting evidence
  • Applications requiring additional assessment, including those involving tribunal or judicial review matters

There is no automatic priority processing. Even where travel is urgent, applications may still be decided within standard timeframes.

Why urgent applications are high risk

Applicants often assume that urgent travel will result in faster processing. However, this is not guaranteed. Lodging a Bridging Visa B application close to departure creates a significant risk that the visa will not be granted in time.

If a Bridging Visa B is not granted before departure, the applicant cannot leave Australia while ensuring their rights to return to Australia remain lawful. Departing without a valid travel facility can result in loss of lawful status or disruption to the substantive visa application.

Urgent applications lodged within a short timeframe before travel are therefore more likely to result in cancelled trips or serious visa consequences.

Department guidance on when to apply

The Department of Home Affairs advises that applicants should apply for a Bridging Visa B no more than three months and not less than two weeks before the intended travel date.

However, current processing conditions mean that lodging only two weeks before travel may not provide sufficient time for a decision. In real terms, this timeframe no longer reflects processing realities for many applicants.
