482 Temporary Skill Shortage Visa

Skills in Demand visa (subclass 482)

The Skills in Demand (SID) visa (subclass 482) is a temporary visa that allows Australian employers to sponsor skilled workers from overseas to fill positions they cannot otherwise find suitably skilled Australian workers to occupy. This visa facilitates the entry of skilled individuals to address labour shortages in various sectors across Australia.

The SID visa replaces the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) (Subclass 482) visa as part of Australiaโ€™s reformed skilled migration framework.

482 Temporary Skill Shortage Visa

The Australia Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (Subclass 482) is a pivotal channel for skilled foreign workers to contribute their expertise to the Australian workforce in areas experiencing skill shortages. This visa category enables employers to address immediate skill gaps by hiring overseas workers for a specified period.

Once an employer is approved to be a sponsor, they can nominate an overseas worker to fill their skilled position. The applicant then applies for a Subclass 482 visa.

The 482 Visa for Australia enables skilled people to work in Australia on a temporary basis.

Key Features of the 482 visa

  • Duration: the SID visa permits holders to work in Australia for up to four years. Hong Kong passport holders may be eligible for a stay of up to five years.
  • Eligibility: applicants must be nominated for a skilled position by an approved sponsor, possess the necessary skills for the job, and meet relevant English language requirements.
  • Pathway to Permanent Residency: eligibility to apply for permanent residence through the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) or the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (subclass 187), if criteria are met.
  • Occupation list: the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) replaces previous lists, consolidating 456 occupations and adding 70 new roles in critical industries like healthcare, cybersecurity, and construction.

The SID visa includes three different streams, that can be used to fill vacancies in a business where Australian workers are unavailable.
