The process for travellers arriving in Australia has been modernised with the introduction of the Australia Travel Declaration (ATD), a digital alternative to the traditional paper-based incoming passenger card. This new system, effective from 12 October 2024, aims to make the entry process more efficient while ensuring the accurate collection of essential travel information.Â
What is the Australia Travel Declaration (ATD)?Â
The ATD allows passengers to submit their travel information electronically before passing through immigration. Updated under the Customs Regulation 2015 and the Migration Regulations 1994, the ATD is currently available on a trial basis, providing travellers with a convenient alternative to paper forms.Â
Â
Key points of the ATD trialÂ
- Efficient entry process: passengers completing the ATD are exempt from filling out a paper passenger card, making their arrival quicker and reducing paperwork.Â
- Voluntary participation: during the trial, filling out the ATD is optional. Passengers who choose not to use the ATD will continue using the traditional paper-based form.Â
- Discretionary visa cancellation: a new regulation allows visa cancellation if incorrect information is submitted in the ATD. This discretionary measure is only enforced if the ATD is not withdrawn before immigration clearance.Â
- Special category visa (subclass 444) adjustments: the ATD can now be used in place of a traditional passenger card for making a valid Special Category Visa application for New Zealand citizens, without impacting the application process if the ATD is not used.Â
Â
How the ATD affects travellersÂ
The ATD reflects Australia’s commitment to modernizing its border management systems. By adopting this digital solution, Australia aligns with the global trend toward paperless travel processes. Travellers opting for the ATD can expect a streamlined entry experience, but it’s crucial to submit accurate information to avoid visa issues.Â
