The US State Department is requiring US visa applicants to provide personal details from the past five years including social media usernames from specific platforms, previous email addresses and phone numbers.
Proposed in March 2018, 15 million foreign travellers to the US are expected to be affected.
The decision will not take effect immediately with the publication of the planned changes starting a 60-day clock for the public to provide comments.
Previously, social media, emails and mobile numbers had only been needed from applicants traveling to areas controlled by terrorism organisations.
