Green List expansion for skilled tradesย

From 18 August 2025, ten additional trades occupations will be added to the Work to Residence pathway on the Green List of in-demand occupations. This expansion provides skilled tradespeople with a clearer, faster route to New Zealand residence, reflecting the ongoing demand for highly skilled workers in essential industries.ย

The Work to Residence pathway is designed to attract and retain workers whose skills are critical to New Zealandโ€™s economy. Applicants in these trades will be eligible to apply for residence after completing 24 months of full-time, paid employment in New Zealand in a relevant role.ย

ย

Occupations includedย

Eligible applicants must hold current employment, or a job offer in one of the following trades:ย

  • Metal Fabricatorย
  • Metal Machinist (First Class)ย
  • Fitter (General)ย
  • Fitter and Turnerย
  • Fitter Welderย
  • Pressure Welderย
  • Welderย
  • Panel Beaterย
  • Vehicle Painterย
  • Paving Plant Operatorย

ย

Eligibility criteriaย

From 18 August 2025, applicants working in these trades may qualify for residence if they:ย

  • Hold a job or job offer in one of the listed occupationsย
  • Are 55 years of age or younger at the time of applicationย
  • Comply with the standard health, character, and English language criteriaย
  • Can show at least 24 months of full-time paid work in a relevant role in New Zealand, at or above the required pay rate, and continue to earn at least that rate when applying for residence.ย

Pay rate requirements for Green List tradesย

Different wage levels apply depending on the occupation:ย

  • $43.63 an hour (equivalent to $90,750 a year) โ€“ applies to Metal Fabricators, Welders, Fitters, and Machinistsย
  • $38.59 an hour (equivalent to $80,267 a year) โ€“ applies to Panel Beaters, Vehicle Painters, and Paving Plant Operatorsย

ย

These thresholds were set following a 2023 review of the Green List and reflect the high level of expertise required in these trades.ย

ย

Impact on New Zealandโ€™s workforceย

The addition of trades roles to the Green List reflect the Governmentโ€™s goal of aligning immigration settings with New Zealandโ€™s workforce needs. Employers gain greater certainty in securing long-term talent, while skilled workers have clearer pathways to residence.ย

Further updates to the Green List and the Skilled Migrant Category are expected later this year, with more details to follow.ย
