New Zealand visa income thresholds increased

New Zealand visa income thresholds increase from 30 April 2026. New Zealand will increase visa income thresholds from 30 April 2026, impacting Pacific Access, Samoan Quota, and parent visa categories.

New Zealand updates visa income thresholds

New Zealand will implement updated income thresholds across several visa categories from 30 April 2026. The changes apply to key pathways, including the Pacific Access Category, Samoan Quota, Parent Category Resident Visa, and Parent Boost Visitor Visa.

Authorities review these thresholds each year to reflect wage growth, cost of living pressures, and benefit settings. This ensures that sponsorship requirements remain realistic and aligned with economic conditions.

.

Pacific Access Category and Samoan Quota income increase

Applicants under the Pacific Access Category and Samoan Quota will see a modest increase in income requirements where dependent children are included. From 30 April 2026, the minimum annual income will increase to NZD $55,404.96, up from NZD $54,133.04, applying to both the Pacific Access Category Resident Visa and the Samoan Quota Resident Visa.

The revised threshold will only affect applications lodged from the effective date where dependent children are part of the application.

.

Parent visa sponsorship thresholds aligned with median wage

Income thresholds for parent visa sponsors will increase in line with the June 2025 median wage of NZD $35.00 per hour. This replaces the previous benchmark of NZD $33.56.

Parent Category Resident Visa

Sponsors must continue to meet income requirements across two of the last three completed New Zealand tax years. These tax years run from 1 April to 31 March.

Importantly, applications already submitted under this category will not be impacted by the new thresholds.

.

Parent Boost Visitor Visa income requirements from 30 April 2026

Updated income thresholds will apply to sponsors of the Parent Boost Visitor Visa. These figures determine how many parents can be supported.

Minimum annual income for one sponsor

  • 1 parent: NZD $72,800
  • 2 parents: NZD $109,200
  • 3 parents: NZD $145,600
  • 4 parents: NZD $182,000
  • 5 parents: NZD $218,400
  • 6 parents: NZD $254,800

Minimum annual income for two sponsors

  • 1 parent: NZD $109,200
  • 2 parents: NZD $145,600
  • 3 parents: NZD $182,000
  • 4 parents: NZD $218,400
  • 5 parents: NZD $254,800
  • 6 parents: NZD $291,200

Sponsors must meet these income levels annually. In addition, they must show they have met the required income in at least two of the previous three tax years.

.

Alternative financial requirements for Parent Boost applicants

Applicants under the Parent Boost Visitor Visa may choose to support themselves instead of relying on a sponsor. Updated thresholds will also apply in these cases.

  • Annual income requirement: Applicants must earn at least NZD $33,663.24 per year or NZD $51,182.56 per year (with a partner included).
  • Personal funds requirement: Applicants must hold NZD $170,000 in funds or NZD $260,000 (if including a partner).

These figures are based on New Zealand Superannuation rates. The funds requirement reflects the equivalent of five years of superannuation support.

.

Who is affected by the 2026 visa threshold changes

The updated visa thresholds will apply differently depending on the visa category and timing of the application.

  • Pacific Access Category and Samoan Quota: Applies to new applications from 30 April 2026 where dependent children are included
  • Parent Category Resident Visa: Applies to new applicants based on historical income periods; existing applications remain unchanged
  • Parent Boost Visitor Visa: Applies to all applications lodged on or after 30 April 2026

.

What this means for applicants and employers

Planning ahead will be critical for applicants and employers. Individuals who are close to meeting current thresholds may wish to assess timing carefully before the new requirements take effect. Employers and families should also review income evidence early.  Documentation must clearly demonstrate compliance across the required financial periods.
