Family visa applications to shift to Immigration Online system
New Zealand is continuing their transition toward a fully digital immigration system, with further changes scheduled to take effect from 1 June 2026. From this date, applications for partners and dependent children of temporary visa holders will be submitted and processed through Immigration New Zealand’s enhanced Immigration Online platform, aligning with other visa categories already using the system.
Family visa application changes from June 2026
From 1 June 2026, a range of visitor, work, and student visa pathways linked to a primary temporary visa holder will move into the updated platform. Applications for family members will be managed within a single system, with submissions automatically linked where they relate to the same family unit.
This approach removes the need to manage applications across multiple platforms and supports a more consistent process across visa categories.
Improved Immigration Online application process
The enhanced system introduces a more structured and responsive application experience. Questions adjust based on the applicant’s circumstances, ensuring relevant information is captured upfront while reducing unnecessary steps.
Applicants will also receive clearer guidance on requirements, supported by improved data accuracy and more transparent updates on application status. These changes are expected to reduce incomplete applications and limit the need for follow-up requests.
How visa applications will be managed during the transition
All new applications submitted from 1 June 2026 will be directed to the enhanced system. However, applications already lodged through the previous platform will continue to be processed as usual. For applications that are still in draft form, applicants and advisers will have flexibility. They may choose to complete and submit the application in the existing system or begin a new application in the updated platform. Additional guidance is expected to be released closer to the transition date to support applicants through this change.
