Effective May 1, 2024, the New Zealand government has implemented a significant policy change for overseas secondary school teachers seeking residency. Previously categorised under the Work to Residence pathway, secondary school teachers are now eligible for the Straight to Residence pathway on the Green List of in-demand occupations.
Â
What it means
This change signifies a recognition of the critical role secondary school teachers play in the New Zealand education system and aims to address current teacher shortages. Under the new policy, overseas secondary school teachers can now apply for residency directly from their home countries, provided they meet the following criteria:
- Valid job offer: Applicants must have a confirmed offer of employment from an accredited New Zealand secondary school.
- No prior work experience requirement: Unlike the Work to Residence pathway, there is no longer a mandatory two-year work experience requirement in New Zealand before applying for residency.
Â
This streamlined process is expected to expedite the immigration process for qualified secondary school teachers, making New Zealand a more attractive destination for international educators. Â
It is important to note that this policy change applies specifically to secondary school teachers. Other types of teachers will continue to fall under the Work to Residence pathway.
