The New Zealand Government has announced key changes to the Active Investor Plus Visa, making it more attractive for high-value investors. These changes, effective from 1 April 2025, aim to encourage economic growth by simplifying the investment structure and reducing restrictions for eligible investors.
Key changes to the Active Investor Plus Visa
- Introduction of two investment categories: Growth and Balanced, replacing the existing weighting system.
- Lower investment thresholds: the minimum investment is reduced to NZD$5 million for Growth and NZD$10 million for Balanced category investors, making it more accessible.
- Expanded investment opportunities: Balanced category investments will now include bonds and property (new residential, new/existing commercial or industrial developments).
- Reduced immigration requirements: migrants choosing more active investments will have fewer residency requirements, such as time spent in New Zealand.
- Shorter investment timeframe: investors in both categories must finalise their investments within six months of their Approval in Principle (AIP), with an option for a six-month extension.
- Removal of English language requirement: making the visa more accessible to a wider pool of international investors.
Why these changes matter
These updates align with feedback from investors and industry stakeholders, ensuring a more competitive and attractive investment landscape. By simplifying requirements and reducing barriers, the Government aims to incentivise active investments, drive economic growth, and create more opportunities for Kiwi businesses.
The online application process will remain the same, with the form updated to reflect these changes. More details will be available in early March.
