AEWV Family Criteria Changes Announced

AEWV Family Criteria Changes Announced

The Government of New Zealand has introduced significant changes to the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) criteria that impact the ability of visa holders to bring their families. These changes are effective from 26 June 2024.

AEWV holders in ANZSCO level 4 or 5 roles

From today, AEWV holders employed in ANZSCO level 4 or 5 roles can no longer support work, student, or visitor visa applications for their partners and children. This policy adjustment means that family members will need to meet the requirements for their own respective visas to join the AEWV holder in New Zealand.

Exemptions and unaffected applications

It is important to note that this change does not affect:

  • Individuals who already hold visas as a partner or dependent child of an AEWV holder.
  • Applications from partners or dependent children of AEWV holders submitted before 26 June 2024, will be processed under the previous requirements.
  • AEWV holders in ANZSCO level 4 or 5 roles with a pathway to residence, including those on the Green List, those under a Sector Agreement with a residence pathway, or those earning at least 1.5 times the median wage.
  • AEWV holders in ANZSCO level 1, 2, or 3 roles.

The Government has made these adjustments to align with the broader updates to the AEWV scheme implemented earlier this year. This change reinstates criteria similar to those under the previous Essential Skills Work Visa, ensuring a more consistent approach to visa eligibility and family sponsorship.

If you are an AEWV holder or an employer of one, it is essential to stay informed about these changes and seek guidance as needed. Understanding the new criteria will help in making informed decisions regarding visa applications for partners and dependent children.
