The Business Investor Visa is a New Zealand immigration pathway designed for experienced investors and entrepreneurs who want to actively participate in the growth of a New Zealand business. This visa supports individuals who can bring capital, expertise, and hands-on involvement to help strengthen the countryโ€™s business landscape. It provides a structured route to residence for those ready to invest and contribute directly to New Zealandโ€™s economic development.

Who Is Eligible for the Business Investor Visa?ย

To qualify for the Business Investor Visa, applicants must meet several key criteria:ย

1. Investment Capital: Applicants must invest NZD $1 – 2 million into an established New Zealand business. The level of investment determines the pathway to residence, with higher investment amounts offering a faster route.

2. Active Involvement: Unlike passive investment categories, this visa requires applicants to take an active role in the business they invest in. This may include strategic oversight, operational involvement, or contributing specialist expertise.

3. Business Experience: Applicants must demonstrate relevant business or entrepreneurial experience and provide evidence of their ability to contribute meaningfully to the New Zealand business they are investing in.

4. Health and Character: All applicants must meet New Zealandโ€™s standard health and character requirements and provide supporting documentation.

Visa Process

The Business Investor Visa process typically involves two key stages:ย

1. Initial Business Investor Work Visaย

Successful applicants are first granted a Business Investor Work Visa, allowing them to live in New Zealand while they establish or invest in a qualifying business. This visa provides a structured pathway toward permanent residence.ย

2. Residence Pathway (3 year or fast-track 12 month option)ย

Applicants may qualify for residence after either:ย

  • Three years of maintaining their investment and active involvement, orย

  • Twelve months under the fasttrack option, available to those who invest at the higher threshold and meet all engagement requirements.ย

Ongoing compliance with investment, business activity, and presence requirements is essential for progressing to permanent residency.ย

You must:ย

  • Show you have at least NZD $500,000 in reserve funds to support yourself (and any family members included in your application) while running and growing your businessย

  • Be aged 55 years or younger at the time of applicationย

  • Meet the 3โ€‘year business experience requirement, with evidence of acceptable management or entrepreneurial experienceย

  • Show you can speak and understand English, either through testing or recognised evidenceย

  • Be a fit and proper person, with no history of fraud, dishonesty, or breaches of tax, employment, or immigration lawย
