According to the Department of Home Affairs, the number of applicants granted Australian citizenship has doubled compared to last year with waiting times also dramatically decreasing.
Data released by the Department has indicated the following:
- Waiting time for Australian citizenship has dropped by 10%
- The time from lodgement to ceremony (by conferral) has dropped for 75% of applicants from 20 to 18 months
- From 1 July 2018 and 30 April 2019, around double the number of people were approved as Australian citizens compared to the same period in the preceding year
The Department claims the decreased waiting time is a result of reforms implemented to streamline the process.
Although over 200,000 people are still awaiting their citizenship outcome, this is a significant decrease from the 250,000 compared to last year.
