Enhanced Immigration Online for family of temporary visa applicationsÂ
Immigration New Zealand (INZ) will move family of temporary visa holder applications to its enhanced Immigration Online platform, introducing a more streamlined digital application process for families applying for partner, child, student, work and visitor visas.
The update forms part of INZ’s broader Our Future Services programme, which aims to modernise visa processing systems and improve the overall application experience for applicants and immigration professionals.
What is changingÂ
Applicants lodging family of temporary visa holder applications will be directed to the enhanced Immigration Online system as INZ’s preferred platform for these visa categories.
Importantly, applications submitted through the enhanced system will receive priority assessment during the transition period. As a result, applicants and immigration professionals may experience faster processing outcomes when lodging through the new platform.
At the same time, applications already submitted through the previous system on or before 31 May 2026 will continue to be processed. Applicants do not need to resubmit applications that have already been lodged.
The previous system will also remain available for applicants who need to:
- Complete and submit draft applications already in progress
- Communicate with inz about previously submitted applications
- Submit other visa applications that still rely on the existing form system
Which visa categories are included
The transition applies to a range of family-related temporary visa categories, including:
Â
Student visa categories
Â
Work visa categories
- Partner of a Worker Work Visa
- Partner of Military Work Visa
- Partner of a Student Work Visa
- Partner of an NZ Scholarship Student Work Visa
Â
Visitor visa categories
- Partner of a Worker Visitor Visa
- Child of a Worker Visitor Visa
- Partner of a Student Visitor Visa
- Child of a Student Visitor Visa
- Partner of Military Visitor Visa
- Child of Military Visitor Visa
Â
INZ has also confirmed that additional family visa categories will transition to the enhanced system at later stages of the programme.
How the enhanced Immigration Online system aims to improve processing
INZ stated that the upgraded system focuses on improving the customer experience while reducing common processing delays caused by incomplete applications.
The enhanced platform introduces a dynamic application form that adjusts questions according to the applicant’s circumstances. Consequently, applicants receive clearer guidance about the supporting information and evidence required for their visa application.
In addition, the new system includes Identity Document Reader (IDR) technology, which scans passport details directly into the application form. This feature aims to reduce data entry errors and minimise issues that may affect travel or visa processing.
What applicants should consider
Applicants with draft applications in the previous system can still choose to complete and submit those applications. However, they may also decide to begin a new application through the enhanced Immigration Online platform to potentially benefit from prioritised assessment.
Because INZ will actively prioritise applications lodged through the enhanced system, businesses, families and advisers should prepare for the transition early and ensure they understand the updated application process.
Looking ahead
The move to enhanced Immigration Online represents another significant step in Immigration New Zealand’s long-term digital transformation programme.
As INZ progressively transfers more visa categories to the upgraded platform, applicants can expect increased automation, clearer application guidance, improved communication tools and more streamlined visa processing experiences across future visa pathways.
