New process for employers managing AEWV transitions during business sales

Business sales and restructures can create complex transitions for employers holding accreditation under the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) program. Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has now introduced a refined process to ensure visa holders remain correctly linked to their new employer during such changes.

This adjustment aims to maintain compliance and protect both employers and employees, while addressing a temporary system limitation in INZ’s online platform. It provides a clear pathway for businesses to manage AEWV transfers seamlessly, without disrupting workforce stability or accreditation status.

Why INZ introduced a new AEWV process for business changes

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) announced the new process after identifying a system limitation that affects how AEWV holders are linked to employers during a business sale or restructure. The online system cannot automatically update job tokens, which are used to connect visa holders with their accredited employers.

Under the previous settings introduced in November 2024, AEWV holders could apply for a Job Change to remain in the same role and location without a new job check when a business changed ownership. However, the system limitation meant those job links were not always updated correctly in employer records. This created inconsistencies that made it harder for employees to extend their stay and for employers to meet compliance obligations.

To resolve this issue, INZ has implemented a temporary manual process. Employers must now submit a new job check to formally link AEWV holders to their business while INZ develops a long-term system fix.

What employers need to do

When a business sale or restructure occurs, employers taking on AEWV holders must complete a new job check to formally connect those employees to their organisation. This step ensures visa holders appear correctly under the new employer’s Immigration Online dashboard and that immigration records remain accurate.

INZ will contact affected employers or advisers with clear instructions on how to complete the process. The job check fee will be waived, and advertising will not be required, reducing disruption and cost for businesses managing the transition.

By completing this process, employers can safeguard their accreditation status, maintain compliance with sponsorship obligations, and support their workforce to continue employment without interruption.

Ongoing support and record management

INZ continues to guide affected employers and advisers through the new process, providing clear steps to ensure AEWV holders are correctly linked to their business in Immigration Online. This helps maintain accurate records during business transitions and supports a smooth continuation of employment for visa holders.

Maintaining accurate visa records not only supports workers to remain lawfully employed but also helps employers demonstrate compliance and protect their accreditation standing.
