Christmas in New Zealand is a summer celebration — warm evenings, pōhutukawa in bloom, and long beach days. Immigration New Zealand has advised travellers to apply as early as possible for summer because Christmas and the warmer months bring a significant increase in visitor visa applications and longer processing times.
Visa or NZeTA: which pathway fits
If you’re visiting for a short stay, there are two main pathways depending on your passport and where you’re travelling from. A “tourist visa” refers to the Visitor Visa; some travellers from visa-waiver countries can instead use an NZeTA.
- Visitor visa: the official visa for tourism, visiting family and friends, or short study. Stays are commonly up to 6 or 9 months (within the set limits).
- NZeTA: many visa-waiver travellers use an NZeTA instead of a visa for short stays.
- Australian citizens: do not need a visa or an NZeTA.
- New 12-month trial from 3 November 2025: eligible Chinese and Pacific Islands Forum passport holders travelling from Australia with a valid eligible Australian visa may visit New Zealand on an NZeTA for up to 3 months. Request the NZeTA at least 72 hours before travel.
Apply early: government summer update
Immigration New Zealand encourages anyone planning a summer visit to apply as early as possible. Peak Christmas volumes mean longer processing times. The smartest move is to plan now, confirm the right pathway (Visitor visa or New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA)), and lodge a complete application early so you can secure flights, accommodation and activities with confidence.
Submit a complete application by including accurate identity details, a compliant photo, evidence you are a genuine temporary visitor who will return home, and English documents or certified translations where required. Late or incomplete applications may be delayed or declined; if declined, you must reapply and pay another fee, which can jeopardise holiday travel.

- Decision certainty: early, complete lodgement improves the chance of a decision before planned travel and supports firm bookings.
