International student visas move to enhanced systemย
From Monday 18 August 2025, international Student Visa applications will be managed through Immigration New Zealandโs (INZ) enhanced Immigration Online system (ADEPT). This transition is part of INZโs Our Future Services programme, a seven-year plan to move all visa products onto a streamlined, user-friendly digital platform.ย
Several visa products have already transitioned since 2021, including Visitor, Accredited Employer Work, and Permanent Resident visas. Student visas are now the first to be fully transitioned under the programme. ย
ย
Key Student Visa changes from 18 Augustย
Applicants for the following visas will be automatically directed to the new online application form, from the 18th August 2025:ย
- English language studiesย
- Exchange Student Visaย
- Fee Paying Student Visaย
- Pathway Student Visaย
- NZ Government Scholarship Student Visaย
- Foreign Government Supported Student Visaย
ย
Applications submitted on the old form by 17 August 2025 will still be processed under existing systems. Applicants with drafts in progress on the old form had until 17 September 2025 to complete and submit them, after which remaining drafts have been deleted.ย
ย
Why the change mattersย
The move to the enhanced Immigration Online system represents a significant step towards simplifying and improving the visa application experience. Applicants can expect a faster and more efficient process, with reduced waiting times and clearer communication about the status of their application. The system has been designed with a focus on user experience, offering improved self-service features that give applicants greater control and visibility throughout the process. For both students and education providers, the transition aims to provide a more streamlined, transparent, and supportive pathway to studying in New Zealand.ย
ย
Advice during peak application periodย
With student visa demand currently at its peak, INZ advises applicants not to delay applications until the new form goes live. Students should continue to apply at least three months before their intended travel date to avoid processing delays that could impact study plans.ย
ย
Looking aheadย
Family-related student visa products will transition to the enhanced system over the next year, and paper-based applications remain unchanged for now, with updates expected in due course. The Our Future Services programme will gradually bring all visa types into ADEPT, supporting INZโs vision of delivering a trusted, world-class immigration service.ย
