Immigration New Zealand has implemented significant changes to the Post Study Work Visa (PSWV), effective since 18 November 2024. These modifications aim to broaden access for international students, facilitating greater opportunities for post-study employment.Â
Â
Key Changes:Â
- Eligibility for Consecutive Qualifications:Â
- Students who complete a qualification eligible for a PSWV and subsequently pursue a higher-level qualification that does not meet PSWV criteria can still apply for the visa based on their initial qualification.Â
- Applications must be submitted within 12 months from the expiry date of the student visa associated with the initial qualification.Â
- Example: A student completes a 30-week Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) and immediately progresses to a Master’s degree without meeting the 30-week study requirement for the Master’s. They can apply for a PSWV within 12 months of their PGDip student visa’s expiry.Â
Â
- Expanded Qualification List:
Â- The list of qualifications eligible for a PSWV has been updated to align with the Green List, encompassing more roles in demand.Â
- Notable additions include qualifications for mechanical engineering technicians and primary and intermediate schoolteachers.Â
Â
Implications for International Students:Â
These adjustments provide students with increased flexibility in planning their educational and career trajectories in New Zealand. The inclusion of additional qualifications expands opportunities for those pursuing careers in critical skill areas.Â
