Streamlined Points Test to Bolster Australia’s Skilled Migration

Points Test Reform

Overview of Migration Strategy and Points Test Reform:

Following the detailed Migration Strategy released on December 11, 2023, the Albanese Government is set to reform the Points Test. This pivotal element in skilled migration assesses potential migrants based on crucial skills and attributes aligned with Australia’s labour market needs. The full discussion paper on the Points Test can be reviewed here

Key Aspects of the Points Test:

The Points Test evaluates candidates based on age, English proficiency, employment experience, and educational qualifications, including those obtained in regional Australia. The reformed test will better target skills crucial for economic development, emphasising suitability for employment and societal integration.

Visa Programs Impacted:

The Points Test applies to several visa categories, including:

  • Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189): For highly skilled migrants.
  • Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190): For individuals nominated by Australian states or territories.
  • Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) (Subclass 491) Visa: For those intending to work in regional Australia.

Impact on Employers and Employees:

The reform is expected to refine the selection of migrants, ensuring that employers have access to a workforce that matches the evolving demands of Australia’s economy. This should lead to higher productivity and innovation across sectors. For employees, especially potential migrants, the reform promises a more transparent and fair assessment process, enhancing their prospects of long-term employment and integration into Australian society.

Public Consultation:

A discussion paper has been released, reviewing the Points Test’s structure and effectiveness. Public submissions are encouraged by the Department of Home Affairs by May 24, 2024, to gather feedback on refining the Points Test to align with the new migration objectives. The platform for public submissions can be accessed here.

The Points Test reform is a cornerstone of Australia’s effort to create a more targeted and strategic migration system. Stakeholders are invited to review the discussion paper and contribute submissions.
