The Australian Government has just released the new Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL), which will apply to the Core Skills stream of the new Skills in Demand visa, now expected to replace the Temporary Skill Shortage (subclass 482) visa on 7 December 2024.Â
Â
The CSOL covers 456 occupations, identified through labour market analysis and stakeholder engagement led by Jobs and Skills Australia (JSA). It provides a simplified framework for accessing temporary skilled migration, making it easier for employers to meet labour demands in critical industries.Â
Â
This new list is part of the government’s commitment to replace outdated and rigid occupation lists with a streamlined, consolidated list that is better aligned with Australia’s current labour market needs.Â
Â
Key applications of the CSOLÂ
- Skills in Demand Visa: the CSOL will apply to the Core Skills stream of the Skills in Demand visa, set to replace the Temporary Skill Shortage (subclass 482) visa from 7 December 2024.Â
- Employer Nomination Scheme: for those seeking permanent residency, the CSOL will also be a basis of the Direct Entry stream of the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) visa.Â
Â
What is next? Â
The Australian Government has hinted at additional reforms accompanying the Skills in Demand visa and the upcoming National Innovation visa, both launching on 7 December 2024. More details will be released soon.Â
Â
These changes are designed to provide employers with greater flexibility and ensure Australia’s migration program remains responsive to the evolving demands of the workforce.Â
