The Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) will now be replaced by distinct systems for each country to better suit their changing labour markets. Statistics New Zealand has announced the new classification system called the National Occupation List (NOL) is to be used by comparable but separate systems for both countries.

New Job Classifications

The Australian Bureau of Statistics and Statistics New Zealand are set to implement distinct occupational classifications while ensuring they remain comparable. New Zealand’s new classification will be the National Occupation List (NOL), scheduled for release on 20 November 2024.

During the transition phase, Immigration New Zealand will continue using ANZSCO. Updates about the planned switch to the new classification will be published in 2025 once a confirmed date is assigned. ANZSCO categories jobs based on skill levels, from 1 to 5, with 1 (most skilled) and 5 (less skilled)

For those searching to understand their skill levels belonging to ANZSCOR or the coming NOL, it will be available through the Statistics New Zealand (Stats NZ) website.

Transitioning from ANZSCO to NOL

Since its introduction in 2006, the Australian Bureau of Statistics and Stats NZ have collaboratively maintained the ANZSCO. Both agencies have decided to pursue separate classifications to address current job market needs while preserving consistency.

Thorough Review and Update of ANZSCO

To adapt to the changing labour landscape, both organisations are engaged in a comprehensive review process. This review aims to ensure that the forthcoming classifications accurately reflect contemporary occupational roles.

The following period of consultation will reveal a significant preference for separate classification systems.

Factors Leading to Change

Ongoing shifts in employment trends and industry requirements have highlighted the need for tailored classifications. This evolution allows for improvements that better cater to the distinct workforce characteristics in each nation.

Specific Information from Stats NZ for ANZSCO

Stats NZ will provide targeted resources and guidance for organisations and individuals who rely on ANZSCO for occupational data. This support will facilitate a smooth transition to the new classification system.
