Transit Visa applications moving online

From 12 August 2024, New Zealand is transitioning the application process for Transit Visas to an online platform, providing a streamlined and efficient solution for international travellers. This move is designed to simplify the visa application process, allowing customers and advisers to manage and track their applications in real-time, thus eliminating the need for cumbersome paper applications.

The new online system not only enhances the convenience for applicants but also removes the requirement to pay Visa Application Centre fees, reducing the overall cost for customers. This update reflects New Zealand’s ongoing commitment to improving accessibility and efficiency in its immigration services.

What you need to apply

To apply for a Transit Visa, applicants must ensure they meet specific eligibility criteria and provide necessary supporting documents. Key requirements include:

  • Eligibility check: applicants must confirm that their nationality is on the list of countries requiring a Transit Visa for New Zealand.

    • Passport and travel documents: a valid passport and proof of onward travel arrangements are essential.

      • Supporting documents: depending on individual circumstances, additional documents such as a visa for the next destination, a confirmed itinerary, and evidence of funds may be required.

        • Application process: the online application will require filling out detailed information about the traveller’s journey and uploading the necessary documents.

This change aligns with New Zealand’s broader strategy to modernise its immigration processes, making it easier for travellers to comply with entry requirements without unnecessary delays or costs.

Fiji added to Transit Visa waiver list

From 4 September 2024, Fijian nationals transiting through Auckland International Airport can request an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) instead of applying for a Transit Visa. The NZeTA is a cost-effective option, priced at $17 through the mobile app and $23 via the Immigration New Zealand website. NZeTAs are valid for two years and can be used for multiple journeys. Travellers are advised to allow at least 72 hours for processing.

Fijian nationals with existing Transit Visas can continue to use them until their expiry date. However, those planning to visit, study, or work in New Zealand must apply for the appropriate visa before travelling. It’s important to note that Fijian nationals travelling from or to Fiji through Wellington or Christchurch on Fiji Airways will still need to apply for a visitor visa, as there are no transit facilities at these airports.

Special considerations for group transit visas

It is important to note that while individual Transit Visa applications can be submitted online, Chinese national applicants for Group Transit Visas will still need to use the paper application process for the time being. The New Zealand Immigration Department is actively working on developing an online solution for group visa categories, aiming to extend the benefits of the online system to all applicants in the near future.
