Both Perth and the Gold Coast will be reclassified from ‘metro’ to a ‘regional’ areas effective 16 November 2019 in line with the introduction of the new regional visas.
The objective of the new regional visas are to ease congestion in metro areas and encourage migrants and international students to support regional job vacancies.
This change will allow international students to study in Perth and the Gold Coast and become eligible for an additional year on a Subclass 485 Temporary Graduate visa.
Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services and Multicultural Affairs David Coleman said the Government would continue to work withState and Territory Governments and regional communities to ensure Australia’s migration system meets the needs of Australia’s cities and regions.
“We know areas of regional Australia want to grow – grow their economies, grow their education sectors and grow their communities,” Minister Coleman said.
“We will continue to review our regional migration settings to ensure they continue to support regional Australia.”
